4 tied for lead at Joburg Open in South Africa

Four players are tied for the lead after round one of the European Tour’s Joburg Open in South Africa.

Using a two-course rotation, three of the four including Italy’s Edoardo Molinari opened with 7-under-64s at the East Course of Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club. Scotland’s Craig Lee carded a 7-under-65 on the West Coast.

George Coetzee is part of a group at 6-under and T-5 after 18 holes.

Defending champion Richard Sterne shot 5-under-67 and sits T-13. World No. 19 Charl Schwartzel, the heavy betting favorite coming into the week, opened with a 3-under-69. He is T-42.

  • Inclement weather has halted play after about three dozen players began their opening rounds at the PGA Tour’s AT&T Pebble  Beach National Pro-Am. Jason Day, one of the betting favorites at this week,  is 1-under and tied for the lead in the very early going.
  • Robert Rock and Alvaro Quiros are just outside the early projected cut line in South Africa heading into Friday’s second round.
  • Rory McIlroy committed to play the Honda Classic on the PGA Tour (Feb. 27-Mar. 2) in Florida. McIlroy won the title a few years ago, but walked off mid-tournament last year citing tooth pain.
