Back-to-back 63s has long shot eyeing PGA Tour victory

Weekend Preview – PGA Tour – Humana Challenge – Host Course- PGA West – La Quinta, California –

Patrick Reed’s back-to-back 9-under-63s are different layouts at the Humana Challenge has the 23-year-old eyeing a second PGA Tour victory.

Reed, No. 69 in the Official World Golf Ranking, takes a two-shot lead into the weekend in the California desert near Palm Springs. He entered the week as a 100-to-1 long shot at, but looks comfortable on top with 36 holes to play.

His closest pursuer is Brendon Todd, who fired a 63at the PGA West Palmer Private layout Friday. Todd is bogey-free through two rounds, but only has one career PGA Tour Top 10 on his resume. He did win twice on the Tour including a victory last year.

Reed’s biggest threat might be the layouts. Low scores are expected throughout the weekend creating a putting contest.

Ryan Palmer, at 15-under, and Charley Hoffman (4th place at 14-under) are both proven champions and tour veterans. Eight players are positioned at 11-under and need to make a Saturday run to have a shot on Sunday including Zach Johnson, Harris English and Justin Leonard – a long-time participant at this event.

The cut comes after Saturday’s round as there are three courses in the rotation including La Quinta Country Club and Nicklaus Private. Famed PGA West (Palmer) hosts the final round action.
