Bad Knee Sidelines Woods Again
Golf’s most famous left knee, the one of Tiger Woods, is injured again.
Woods released a statement Tuesday that he has withdrawn from the PGA Tour’s Wells Fargo Quail Hollow Championship, an event he won in 2007. He said he personally notified the tournament director that he would not be able to attend.
According to Woods’ message, the injury is classified as a grade 1 mild medial collateral ligament sprain to the left knee and a mild strain to the left Achilles tendon. He said it occurred during the third round of The Masters on the 17th hole when he attempted a shot from under the Eisenhower tree in the pine straw.
Currently ranked No. 6 in the latest Official World Golf Rankings, Woods has a long history of injuries to his left knee, dating back to 1994 when he had a benign tumor removed. He also had ACL reconstruction in June 2008, after his U.S. Open victory.
Woods trails Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 career Major Championships. Unless the knee improves, it may be a difficult task for player — that just a few years ago — many figured would easily surpass the record.
