Four players — including former PGA Championship major winner Jason Dufner — tied for the overnight lead at the PGA Tour’s CareerBuilder Challenge in the Southern California desert.
Anirban Lahiri, Jerry Kelly and Jeff Overton joined Dufner with 8-under-64s to open the week in La Quinta.
Some 50 players are within four shots of the leaders including defending champion Bill Haas, who is T-7 at 6-under. Matt Kuchar, Francisco Molinari and two-time major champion Angel Cabrera sit at 5-under through 18 holes.
Phil Mickelson excited fans with a hot start. He ended the day T-32 at 4-under. He is looking for his first win in more than two seasons.
Dunfer opened the week as a 28-to-1 betting pick at station Casinos in Las Vegas.

- Joe Durant leads the Champions Tour 2016 debut event at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship in Hawaii after opening with 7-under-65. Durant leads defending champ Miguel Angel Jimenez and Tom Pernice Jr. by a shot. This is the 33rd edition of this event.
- Fog delayed the start of round two and then darkness suspended play in the United Arab Emirates at the European Tour’s Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship. Amateur Bryson DeChambeau is tied at the top with Andy Sullivan at 10-under overall. DeChambeau, the overnight leader, completed only eight holes in round two.
- With holes still to finish in round two on Saturday morning at the Abu Dhabi, Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Ian Poulter are part of a round at T-9 and 5-under.
