Choi Wins PLAYERS Playoff on Toms 3-Putt
Final Round — THE PLAYERS Championship — TPC Sawgrass — Ponte Verde Beach, Florida –
Forty somethings battled down the stretch to decide THE PLAYERS Championship. In the end, it was 40-year-old K.J. Choi defeating 44-year-old David Toms to capture the coveted title on the first sudden death playoff hole.
Toms missed a short putt — his first inside five feet all week — at the island-green 17th hole. He ran his birdie putt to win it past the hole and missed the comeback putt. Choi, playing in his first career PGA Tour playoff, calmly rolled in the clinching putt for the victory.
Choi now has a PLAYERS Championship and a Memorial to his resume.
It was a long Sunday at Ponte Verde Beach, Florida as the leaders needed to play 14 holes to finish up their third rounds before starting the final round.
Graeme McDowell was the 54-hole leader for the first time in this PGA Tour career. After three rounds in the 60s, he struggled with balls in the water on No. 13, 17 and 18 en route to a final-round 79 and a T-33.
Toms shot 70 in his final round including a birdie at the 18th to force the playoff. He had the lead most of the final round, until Choi birdie No. 17 in regulation giving him his first lead of the tournament.
Other Golf News:
- Luke Donald finished 71-71 to finish T-4. With a win, Donald would have moved into the No. 1 world ranking. Donald ended up tied with Nick Watney, who led the tournament after an opening-round 64. His inconsistency cost him on the final day.
- Sergio Garcia fired a 7-under-65 in the final round to break out of the weekend slump. He jumped 39 places to finish T-12.
- 54-year-old Mark O’Meara, who opened with a 66 to turn some heads on Thursday, shot 79-77 on the weekend to finish 74th.

Toms made a great putt on 18 to get in the playoff! Although he may feel disappointed, when the $1,026,000 second place money hits his bank account, he will feel better.
That is more than the $1,008,000 he got for 1st at the Wachovia in 2003, and more than the $936,000 1st place money he got for the 2001 PGA.
