Garcia takes lead at Shell Houston Open, Pak on top at Kraft

Spain’s Sergio Garcia surged up the leader board at the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open in round two.

Garcia, who is 5-under through 12 holes at the Golf Club of Houston in round two action, is now 10-under overall and alone in the lead. He is two shots ahead of Cameron Tringale and Matt Jones, who are both mid-way through their rounds.

Overnight co-leaders Charley Hoffman and Bill Haas are both over par in round two. Hoffman is 1-over through 10, while Haas is 1-over through 13 holes.

Keegan Bradley (6-under-66 Thursday) and Matt Kuchar (66) have yet to tee off in round two. They are part of a large group at T-6 including Hoffman, Haas and Steve Stricker.

The 34-year-old Garcia won the European Tour’s Commercialbank Qatar Masters earlier this season and finished 8th at The Honda Classic on the PGA Tour. He also logged Top 20s in the last two starts in World Golf Championships events.

  • Se Ri Pak has reached 6-under overall to tie for the lead at the LPGA Tour’s Kraft Nabisco Championship — the first major of the season. Pak, 36, is midway through her second round while overnight leader Shanshan Feng has yet to tee off. Michelle Wie is just a shot back at 5-under at the moment.
  • Dustin Johnson, one of the tournament favorites at the Shell Houston Open, shot 80 on Thursday and withdrew from the event.
  • After a 67 Friday, Marc Warren (5-under overall) leads the European Tour’s NH Collection Open in Spain at the moment. Several players are still completing round two.
  • Inbee Park, who won three majors on the LPGA Tour in 2013 including the Kraft, opened 2-over-74 in the opening round of her title defense. She is currently T-47 and tees off round two later in the afternoon Friday. Frustrated with her putting, she recently switched to a different putter model on the greens.
