Matt Jones’ comeback victory over Matt Kuchar Sunday at the Shell Houston Open vaulted him 49 places to No. 41 in the latest Official World Golf Ranking.
Jones, who birdied the 72nd hole to earn a spot in a playoff at with Kuchar at 15-under, chipped in to win the title — his first on the PGA Tour. He became the latest Aussie to win on tour — Jason Day, John Senden and Steven Bowditch all have victories in 2014.
Jones, a whopping 100-to-1 underdog at Ladbrokes.com to win the title to start the tournament, finished 13th on the PGA Tour’s All-Around category in 2013. The victory earned Jones a spot in the Masters this week at Augusta National.
The Top 5 remained unchanged in the men’s rankings led by Tiger Woods, Adam Scott, Henrik Stenson, Day and Phil Mickelson. Sergio Garcia, who finished third in Houston, moved to No. 6, while Kuchar returned to the Top 10 at No. 7.
Dustin Johnson, who withdrew after an opening-round 80 in Houston, slipped out of the Top 10.
On the LPGA Tour, Lexi Thompson’s impressive victory at the Kraft Nabisco Championship marked her first major title.
At age 19, Lexi has now has four LPGA Tour victories and moved to 6th in the latest Rolex Rankings behind Inbee Park (38th at the Kraft), Suzann Pettersen, Stacy Lewis (T-3 at the Kraft), Lydia Ko and Karrie Webb.

- Marco Crespi of Italy (10-under) won the European Tour’s NH Collection Open in Spain by two shots.
- Thompson was 4-under through nine holes Sunday in the final round mounting a five-shot advantage over Michelle Wie. She cruised home with nine pars to win the title at 14-under overall.
- The Shell Houston Open playoff between Jones and Kuchar was the 22nd in the event’s history — second to only the U.S. Open.
- The victory was Jones’ fourth Top 15 of the 2014 season. He was 48th on the PGA Tour Money List a season ago.
