Germany’s Martin Kaymer fired 10 birdies in his opening round of the 2015 calendar year at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.
Kaymer opened the European Tour event scattering two bogeys to card 8-under-64. He leads at Abu Dhabi Country Club by a shot. He won this event in the United Arab Emirates in 2011, 2011 and 2008 – three of his 11 European Tour career victories.
Several high-profile players are tracking Kaymer including Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler. Playing together, they shot 67s in the first round and sit T-8. Branden Grace, who captured the European Tour’s Alfred Dunhill Championship in December, is T-3 after a 66.
Kaymer, No. 12 in the Official World Golf Ranking, won the U.S. Open last season and the PGA Tour’s flagship event – The Players Championship. According to www.skybet.com, Kaymer was listed as a 14-to-1 betting selection heading into the week.
