Hunter Mahan, Charles Howell III and Cameron Tringale all carded 5-under-66s to assume the opening-round lead at the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup Playoff opener at The Barclays.

Several players in the afternoon wave are making a move including World No. 5 Justin Rose and sixth-ranked Jim Furyk.

After his media tour following back-to-back major victories, World No. 1 Rory McIlroy struggled in the opening round. He shot 40 on his front nine and settled for a 3-over-74. He is currently T-108 in the 122-player field. He will need a low round Friday to make the weekend cut. He leads the FedEx Cup Standings heading into the playoffs.
