McCarron leads after 64 at Finals opener Finals – Hotel Fitness Championship – Sycamore Hills Golf Club, Fort Wayne, Indiana –

Scott McCarron managed eight birdies and an eagle en route to an opening-round 8-under-64 at the Tour Finals at the Hotel Fitness Championship.

The tournament is the first of a four-event series to determine 25 PGA Tour membership cards for next season. The top-earning 25 players over the Finals earn the playing cards.

McCarron, who ripped Sycamore Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is a shot clear of four players including Jason Gore and Bud Cauley.

Jhonattan Vegas is part of a group at 8-under including former Masters champion Trevor Immelman and past Augusta National runner-up Len Mattiace.

  • Thailand’s Pornanong Phatlum leads the LPGA Tour’s Safeway Classic in Portland, Oregon after shooting 64 in the first round. She needed just 22 putts. Phatlum, who has three Top 10s this year, leads Lexi Thompson by a shot and a trio contenders – including Cristie Kerr, Lizette Salas and Sandra Gal – by two.
  • Louis Oosthuizen, 21st in the Official World Golf Rankings, is out for the season with neck and hip injuries. The former Open champion. Oosty won the European Tour’s Volvo golf Champions back in January.
  • Former Rolex Ranking World No. 1 Yani Tseng opened with a 5-under round in Portland. She is T-6 after 18 holes.
  • Titleist Golf led the way among manufacturers at the Open Championship won by Phil Mickelson in balls, irons, utility irons and wedges.
