First Round –European Tour – Volvo Golf Champions – Durban Country Club – Durban, South Africa –
France’s Raphael Jacquelin posted 5-under-67 in the opening round of the European Tour’s Volvo Golf Champions in South Africa.
Jacquelin, 120th in the Official World Golf Ranking, needed just 23 putts in the first round at Durban Country Club. The Frenchman leads defending champion Louis Oosthuizen by a shot. Former Open champion Darren Clarke and Victor Dubuisson are T-3 at 3-under.
Colin Montgomerie, a Hall of Famer, is T-5 after a 70, while Padraig Harrington sits at T-12. Harrington, a three-time major champion, finished fourth here in 2013.
Heavy favorite Charl Schwartzel, a 3-to-1 selection at Skybet.com heading into the week, struggled to shoot 2-over-74. He hit just 3 of 14 fairways in the opening round settling for a T-28 start through 18 holes.
For Jacquelin, he was 32nd on the European Tour in 2013 in Putts Per Round. He captured the Spanish Open last April winning in a three-man playoff.

- Sang-Moon Bae leads the PGA Tour’s Sony Open in Hawaii at the moment after firing a bogey-free 7-under-63 in Oahu. Bae leads Chris Kirk by a shot, while a number of players are still finishing up round one action.
- Jacquelin was a 66-1 long shot to win the Volvo Golf Champions to start the week. Oosthuizen entered the week at 12-1.
- Bae showed up in Hawaii as a 150-1 super long shot to win the Sony. He was 51st on the PGA Tour Money List last season and finished 30th in Stroked Gained Putting.
- Former major champions Retief Goosen and John Daly both shot 4-under rounds in Hawaii. They are T-3 at the moment chasing Bae at the Sony Open.
