Preview – PGA Tour – Valero Texas Open – AT&T Oaks TPC San Antonio – San Antonio, Texas –
The PGA Tour hosts the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio, Texas at TPC San Antonio beginning Thursday.
Phil Mickelson, who just recently committed to play, headlines the 144-player field along with defending champion Jimmy Walker, Matt Kuchar and Open champion Zach Johnson. Branden Grace, who captured last week’s RBC Heritage in Hilton Head, is also teeing it up along with World No. 13 Patrick Reed.
Bryson DeChambeau is a fresh face in San Antonio making his second start as a pro. He logged a Top 5 in his first official PGA Tour start as a professional last week.
A tight layout awaits the field.
Although the tournament has a history in Texas and especially San Antonio, this is just TPC San Antonio’s 5th year as host. Stretching to more than 7,400 yards and designed by Greg Norman, this par-72 layout demands accurate tee shots for success. High winds are always a possibility to challenge the players.
The event is the third oldest on tour dating back to 1922.
- Walker (11-under) beat out Jordan Spieth by four shots under windy conditions. Only 10 players broke par for the tournament. Billy Horschel, Chesson Hadley and Daniel Summerhays rounded out Top 5 efforts. Dustin Johnson and Chris Kirk were among those with Top 10s.
Past champions here include Stephen Bowditch (2014), Martin Laird (2013), Ben Crane (2012), Brendan Steele (2011), Adam Scott (2010) and Zach Johnson, who won
it back-to-back in 2008 and 2009.
FANTASY: Take a look at Charley Hoffman. He is trending recently contending into the weekend and loves it here. Hoff has nine Top 15s here in his last 10 starts at the VTO. Take players like Matt Kuchar – T-15 last year. He logged a Top 10 at Harbour Town. DeChambeau is riding a confident wave and could record a Top 10 here. Zach Johnson is a must play this week.
BETTORS: At 12-to-1 odds at Silverton Casino in Las Vegas, Walker is the betting favorite as the defending champion. But, consider more value in a player like J.B. Holmes. At 22-1, J.B. is due for a victory after strong performances this season. Play Hoffman at 25-1 odds. He seems to be in the mix every weekend of late. Perhaps, this is his week. Kuchar (18-1) is another player trending and due to cash in with a victory.
