Preview – PGA Tour – Frys.com Open – Oct. 10-13 – CordeValle Golf Club – San Martin, California –
The PGA Tour’s 2013-2014 wrap-around season tees off this week in California with the Frys.com Open.
The former “Fall Series” gives way to full FedEx Cup points – 500 to this week’s champion. The winner also receives an invitation to the 2014 Masters Tournament at Augusta National.
The CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, California hosts one of the strongest field that includes several participants from last week’s Presidents Cup including Angel Cabrera, Hideki Matsuyama and Marc Leishman.
The field also includes tournament winners from late in the 2013 season like Gary Woodland and defending champion Jonas Blixt. Nearly a dozen former champions are also teeing it up this week: Vijay Singh, Davis Love III, Retief Goosen, Justin Leonard, Lucas Glover, Trevor Immelman, Mike Weir, Y.E. Yang, Ben Curtis, Cabrera and Geoff Ogilvy.
The par-71 Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course reaches more than 7,300 yards from the back tees and features natural topography including hillside, canyons and broad meadows.
At up to 230 yeards, the par-3 third hole should have a say in this week’s champion along with the 605-yard par-5 1q2th hole. Previous champions at this event include Bryce Molder (2011), Rocco Mediate (2010), Troy Matteson (2009) and Cameron Beckman (2008).
Last Year’s Recap:
- Blixt broke through for his maiden PGA Tour victory at 16-under overall. He was a shot clear of Tim Petrovic and Jason Kokrak. Singh, Jimmy Walker, Alex Rocha and John Mallinger finished T-4.
The Golf Channel has the television coverage all week.
FANTASY: Look for guys in solid form from the Web.com Tour Finals like – John Peterson (four Top 5s in the playoffs) and Ryo Ishikawa. Pay attention to Singh this week. The big Fijian was T-4 here a year ago and should be rested after dabbling on the Champions Tour and European Tour with late-season starts.
BETTING: Woodland (16-to-1 odds at Ladbrokes.com) is the outright betting favorite. The 80th-ranked player in the world won late in the season, looked strong in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and finished T-9 here last year. Blixt is 20-1 alongside Billy Horschel, who is 35th in the world rankings. Horschel slowed down in the middle of 2013 ending up 16th in the FedEx Cup standings and recorded eight Top 10s on the year.
Other Golf News:
- The European Tour’s Portugal Masters this week ramps up the Race To Dubai competition. Martin Kaymer (12-1) is the betting favorite. Take a look at Joost Luiten, who has won twice this year. And, he was 4-1 in the Seve Trophy matches a week ago.
- Aaron Baddeley, who is in the field this week in California, finished the 2013 season 5th in the Strokes-Gained Putting.
- The LPGA Tour returns to action this week at the SIME Darby LPGA Malaysia. Inbee Park, the Rolex Ranking No. 1, is defending champion. World No. 3 Stacy Lewis is the betting favorite at 5-1 odds. Lewis plays with Beatriz Recari and Na Yeon Choi teeing off No. 1 at 9:29 a.m. local time at Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club.
