Rory rises in Dubai, Woods fades in Phoenix

Rory McIlroy fired a bogey-free 8-under-64 to overtake the lead at the 36-hole mark at the European Tour’s Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

McIlroy, the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking and a 3-to-1 heavy betting favorite at this week, reached 14-under overall –one shot clear of Marc Warren. Seve Benson and Graeme McDowell are T-2 at 12-under and just two back. G-Mac shot 65 Friday at Emirates Golf Club.

At host of players sit at 11-under including Lee Westwood, round one leader Bernd Wiesberger, Danny Willett, Andy Sullivan and Stephen Gallacher, the two-time defending champion at the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Martin Kaymer and Henrik Stenson are 8-under and six back, while Sergio Garcia (75-71) is T-105.

  • Ha-Ha Jang (12-under through two rounds) continues to lead the LPGA Tour’s Coates Golf Championship. Early third-round action is underway in Florida with Stacy Lewis and Lydia Ko both T-2 at 8-under and four back at the moment.
  • After opening with 64, Ryan Palmer leads the PGA Tour’s Waste Management Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale in round-two play. Palmer, who is 1-under through 10 holes Friday, is 8-under overall and tied with rookie Justin Thomas at the moment. Thomas and Palmer have both been trending over the last few tournaments heading into Phoenix.
  • Tiger Woods struggled to shoot 73 in round one in Phoenix. He was several over par at one point and looked uncomfortable over the ball during several shots. In round two action, Woods is 9-over through 14 holes and on his way to missing the cut. He could slip out of the Top 50 in the world rankings next week.
  • Major champions Bubba Watson, Keegan Bradley and Zach Johnson are all in the mix at TPC Scottsdale inside the Top 10 at the moment. Watson, the reigning Masters champion, is just one shot back.
