Zach’s comeback W at BMW Championship gives him a shot to capture FedEx Cup title

Final Round – PGA Tour – FedEx Cup Playoffs – BMW Championship – Conway Farms Country Club – Lake Forest, Illinois –

While the 40-somethings of Jim Furyk and Steve Stricker struggled in the final pairing, Zach Johnson rallied for a comeback victory at the FedEx Cup Playoffs’ BMW Championship Monday in Illinois.

The former Masters champion exploited Conway Farms Country Club carding a final-round 6-under-65 to finish 16-under overall and two shots clear of Nick Watney. Former World No. 1 Luke Donald (T-4) and Watney both earned a spot in the TOUR Championship thanks to their strong efforts at the BMW.

Furyk, the 54-hole leader, slipped up with three back-nine bogeys to shoot even par. He ended up third place alone, while Stricker finished T-4 alongside Donald, Jason Day and Hunter Mahan. Brandt Snedeker and Charl Schwartzel logged Top 10s.

Lee Westwood, Bubba Watson, Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy (78) were all eliminated from the playoffs this week.

After a slow start to 2012, Johnson recorded his sixth Top 10 in his last seven starts. The 24th-ranked Johnson — who was bogey free Monday — was a 40-to-1 betting pick heading into the tournament at Ladbrokes.com. He moved up to 4th in the FedEx Cup Standings.

Tiger Woods failed to mount a challenge Monday finishing even-par 71 and T-11. He returned to the top of the FedEx Cup Standings ahead of Henrik Stenson and Adam Scott. Each of the Top 5 in the standings has a chance to win the Cup with a victory at East Lake.
